January 25, 2022

I am so excited to bring you a limited edition photo session in my Castle Rock studio to capture your pregnancy, your breastfeeding journey, or simply you with your babies at any age and stage. Here is a welcome guide to help you prepare for your motherhood photo session!

Studio sessions at Photography by Alyssum are such a “best of both worlds” approach to indoor sessions. I’ve designed them to have a styled-life approach to maternity, newborn, and baby photography. I want you to walk into my Castle Rock, CO, home studio and feel like I’ve taken the coziest pieces of lifestyle portraiture and stitched it with beautiful lighting, textures, and comfort. To help this dreamy aesthetic come together, I have a client closet filled with beautiful clothing for mama, babies and children, available during your motherhood photo session.

Wardrobe Styling

When you book your session for The Motherhood Event, you’ll receive an access code to begin using my wardrobe styling service. Please start by visiting Style & Select where my client closet is cataloged so you have an idea of my collection. The closet is full of 50+ beautiful dresses that will be available to borrow on the day of your session! If you’d prefer to buy your own outfit, there will be links to lots of other beautiful pieces from various online shops. At the motherhood photo session, there will be time for one beautiful outfit per person (no wardrobe changes please).

Think Earth tones, neutral whites and creams, and desaturated colors. Popular, modern accent colors are rust, brown, cream, and sage green. These compliment my warm style and don’t tend to cast unwanted colors on your family.

Avoid dressing babies in “adult” clothing like button-up collared shirts or stiff pants. These things hide their tiny features that we aim to capture and remember! Babies and toddlers look best in “baby clothes,” and more skin showing translates to a more emotive and romantic vibe. Overalls and rompers work great for kiddos who move and crawl around because they are one piece. Remember bloomers for baby girls and toddlers in dresses.

Children

I have a closet of options for young children up to about 8 years old, or please feel free to bring your own. Boys are easy with a simple tee and brown khaki bottoms or overalls and girls look great in a dress in white, cream, or earthy tones. Please avoid any clothing with logos, designs, or neon colors.

Mamas

Whether you’re expecting, you’ve recently had a baby, or it’s been years since you’ve had your last, a beautiful textured dress can help make your motherhood photo session feel extra special. My client closet features many beautiful gowns that are maternity and postpartum-friendly. Bring along a few nude bra options (lace bralette, strapless bra, regular bra) and nude undies to go with most of my options. You also have the choice to bring your own wardrobe if you prefer to have it all planned out ahead of time. Feel free to send me what you’re planning so I can provide some feedback on how it’ll work in the studio!

Motherhood Photo Session: What to Expect

When you arrive at the studio, please come right in through the front door! No need to ring the bell; I will likely be with other clients when you arrive. Please just remove your footwear inside and continue in to select wardrobe or to your hair and makeup appointment with Heather.

Hair & Makeup

This is a day to celebrate you, mama, and I want it to be as relaxing for you as possible. If you’ve added on hair and makeup, our HMU artist Heather Denison will be on site to make you feel like the beautiful woman you are! Your appointment has been scheduled one hour before your photo session. I will be providing a complimentary charcuterie lunch box by The Grateful Plate to anyone who has booked these services!

When possible, please have a friend or family member drop off your children 5-10 mins before your scheduled photos to allow you to have an undisturbed hair and makeup appointment.

Client Closet

If you are planning to borrow clothing from the client closet, please add in extra time to try on before your hair and makeup. Around 30 extra minutes should work. Keep in mind that another client might be wearing the same dress as you right before or after your session, so please make the wardrobe switch as quickly as possible.

Motherhood photo sessions are scheduled back to back on the half hour and will run approximately 20-30 minutes in duration. The fitting room and closet is in the studio to the right of the front door, and the women’s and children’s clothing collection is sorted by size in this room. The lounge area is to the left of the front door; make yourself comfortable!

Health Precautions

“Tiny hands touch this floor. Please leave your shoes at the door.”  When you arrive at my studio, please remove your footwear inside by the door. You will be barefoot throughout the session, which helps reduce germs in the studio and also fits with the cozy vibe. You are welcome to wear a mask when you’re not being photographed. I am fully vaccinated, but let me know if you’d also like me to keep a mask on while we’re together. Please be advised that other clients may be in the studio at the same time as you, and it will be each individual’s choice to wear a mask or not.

Motherhood Photo Session: After the Session

Once our motherhood photo session is complete, I have the pleasure of selecting my very favorite images from the session to provide you with your proof gallery via email. You’ll select the images you’d like to include in your final gallery, and you always have the option to add on more to your package.

I will edit each of those beautiful images for your collection in the following two weeks after you’ve made your selections. Once you receive your images, you are welcome to print them the through the lab of your choice or order directly from my pro lab within your gallery for your convenience.

Please don’t hesitate to ask any questions about preparing your family for your session. I can’t wait to capture this special time in your lives!

FOODS FOR NURSING MOMS TO AVOID
48 HOURS BEFORE NEWBORN SESSION:

Acidic food/drinks such as:

Cranberries     Pineapple     Grapefruit
Oranges     Lemons     Berries
Tomatos     Chocolate     Nuts
Pizza     Chili     Mexican food     Ketchup

Gassy vegetables such as:

Asparagus     Onions     Pickles
Cucumbers     Broccoli     Cauliflower
Brussels Sprouts     Cabbage

Restrict soda, coffee, tea, wine, and beer.

Sometimes dairy, depending on the baby.

I know this seems like a long list, but you only have your newborn's portraits taken once! It's not worth it to risk having a gassy or fussy baby who just can't settle. And in the event that your baby is still gassy, I always recommend keeping Gripe Water on hand. I know it was a lifesaver for me when my two were babies.
